Kenya women taught soccer lesson in Addis

Ethiopia 5 Kenya 0

ETHIOPIA crushed Kenya 5-0 in a women’s international friendly in Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Kenya thought they had prepared well enough and after a rare camping accorded the women’s team in Mombasa, they set off on Friday hoping for good results in Ethiopia.

However, the Kenyan standards proved far below that of the hosts.

The superior Ethiopians were using the friendly to prepare for the forthcoming African Women’s Championships, a competition the Kenyans have never come close to qualifying for.

Ethiopia are grouped in Pool “B” with champions Nigeria, Cote d’ Ivoire and Cameroon. The tournament hosts, Equatorial Guinea, are in Pool “A” with South Africa Senegal and DRC Congo.

Shetay Sisay hit a hat-trick while Rehema Zerga scored a brace as the polished Ethiopians taught Kenya a soccer lesson.

“Our team has been together for the last two years. We are now confident that we will record good results in the African Championship,” said Ethiopian head coach Abraham Tekle Haymanot.

“We have experienced players. Some of them have been in the national team for the last eight and others 10 years.”

Ten years ago Kenya and Ethiopian women had met in an international with Kenya winning the tie 4-1 [in 2001].

While Ethiopian standards have risen to the point of reaching the African finals, Kenya’s have tumbled.

Before leaving Nairobi on Friday, the Kenyan women had prepared in Mombasa since September 18.

Under coach Joseph Oyoo, 32 players attended the camp.
