TUSKER made a humbling exit from the 2012 Cecafa Kagame Club Cup tournament on Saturday, a barren draw with Azam FC of Tanzania Mainland, condemning the Kenyans to one of the worst performances ever at this champion inaugurated in 1974.
The woeful team could not find a goal in their three-team Group ‘C’, vacating places in the quarter finals to Azam and Mafunzo of Zanzibar. Tusker had earlier drawn 0-0 with Mafunzo.
Sammy Omollo surprisingly said after the elimination that his boys played well. If they did, then he would have to pay glowing tribute to many other teams that were better than Tusker and will continue playing when the knockout stage begins on Monday. The Kenyans return home on Sunday, no doubt to resume Kenyan Premier League action, from which they had been exempted until July 28, when the tournament here is set to end.
If the Kenyans played to their strength as Omollo suggested, it means their standards are far below that of the teams that have emerged favourites for this year’s title, including unbeaten Group ‘A’ winners Uganda Revenue Authority [URA], Group ‘C’ top team , the surprising Atletico Olympique of Burundi, defending champions Young Africans of Tanzania Mainland and of course their Dar es Salaam city rivals Simba.
Simba and AS Vita Club, a former Africa champion from DR Congo drew 0-0 in a match to decide the second placed team in Group 'A'. The Congolese finished on a better goal difference after their penalty goal in the first half was cancelled in the second period.
