Double fortune for winning Gor as Ulinzi take tumble

GOR Mahia routed Nairobi City Stars 4-0 while another result, that of Ulinzi Stars losing 0-1 to Sony Sugar, worked perfectly for K’ogalo’s plans to angle themselves for a shot the Kenyan Premier League title.

Gor were full of flight in a happy afternoon at the City Stadium, Danny Sserunkuma scoring a brace, assisted by strikes from Rama Salim and substitute Edwin Lavatsa.

They closed the gap between themselves at sixth place and second placed Tusker to three points. However, leaders AFC Leopards, 1-0 winners against Karuturi Sports at Mumias maintained their eight point gap between them and their arch rivals.

Since Gor Mahia will also depend on teams ahead of themselves dropping points, they welcomed as wonderful news Ulinzi’s stumble at Gusii Stadium against Sony. However, Thika United won 1-0 away at Muhoroni Youth to occupy third place and overtaking Ulinzi.

Thika, Ulinzi and Sofapaka are all on 33 points, a position within striking distance for Gor before they can aim their guns on No. 2 Tusker [36 points].

Elsewhere Western Stima steadied their ship beating Chemelil 2-1 at Bukhungu, Kakamega.

Kevin Omondi provided a defence splitting pass to Danny Sserunkuma who rode into the box and fired past City Stars’ ‘keeper Ronny Kagunzi in the 18th minute.

Sserunkuma’s second was almost a carbon copy; receiving another floated from almost halfway to shrug off a defender as he approached from the left edge of the box and fire to the far post past Kagunzi again in the 27th minute.

Rama Salim made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute with an individual effort. He rounded the ‘keeper then calmly slotted the ball into the empty net.

Edwin Lavatsa came off the bench to complete the rout in the 89th minute.

AFC Leopards 1 Karuturi Sports 0

Victor Ochieng’ pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire in a last minute goal for Leopards to overcome a plucky Karuturi Sports at Mumias.

It was the second match in a row that Leopards took an unconvincing sole goal victory. A controversial penalty gave them victory of Nairobi City Stars last time out but they still maintain their position at the top of the table on 40 points from 19 matches, four ahead of No. 2 Tusker who have a match because of their absence while taking part in the Cecafa Kagame Club Cup tournament in Tanzania.

Muhoroni Youth 0 Thika United 1

Thika United’s Harambee Stars man Clifton Miheso scored the all important goal at Muhoroni, which game the visitors the valuable win.

Only four minutes into the second half Miheso deflected a Haji Mwachoki curled free kick into goal.

Sony Sugar 1 Ulinzi 0

Kenya youth international Enock Agwanda struck the Sony Sugar winner just before the interval which dealt a serious blow to Ulinzi Stars’ title chase.

Western Stima 2 Chemelil Sugar 1

Fredrick Nyarombo converted a cross from Justin Monda to give Western Stima the opening lead in the 28th minute.

Substitute Andrew Isemeki equalised for Chemelil in the 53rd minute but Aloyce Mangi scrambled in the ball from the edge of the box for the Stima winner in the 73rd minute.
